Areas of expertise: Condensed Matter Physics, Topological Physics, Materials Science, Cryogenics, Scanning Probe Microscopy and Spectroscopy
Thrust: Technology
Professor Maria Iavarone investigates the electronic and structural properties of matter at the nanoscale, including quantum properties of materials, quantum phase transitions, superconductivity, electronic correlations, 2-D materials and quantum confinement. She uses the tools of ultrahigh-vacuum and low-temperature scanning-probe microscopy and spectroscopy to unravel the physics of complex systems at atomic scale. Her role at SQMS is to study the superconducting properties of qubits at atomic scale to discover and mitigate sources of decoherence in superconducting qubits.
